What to wear in Ghana in 2027, month by month

    By sneakersInn team · Updated

Here's what to wear in Ghana through 2027, month by month: light layers for harmattan in January and February, a smart date outfit for Valentine's Day on Sunday 14 February, red, gold and green for Independence Day on Saturday 6 March, your best church outfit for Easter Sunday on 28 March, rain-ready shoes from April to June, linen through the hot months, a light layer for the cool spell in July and August, then wedding-season tailoring and Detty December outfits to close the year.

This calendar is built for southern Ghana and Accra, using Accra's official climate averages and the public holidays set by the 2025 amendment to Ghana's holidays law. Weather varies from year to year and by region, and the government can move some holidays, so treat the dates of moveable days as a guide and check official announcements nearer the time.

Rainy days count days with at least 1mm of rain. Three things stand out for getting dressed:

    1. It's warm all year. Highs never average below 28°C, so breathable fabrics matter every month.
    2. The real wet season is May and June. June alone averages about 190mm, around a quarter of the year's rain.
    3. The coolest weather isn't in harmattan. July and August have the lowest highs and lows. That's when a light layer is most useful in the evenings.

What should I wear in January?

The year starts dry and hazy with harmattan dust, which comes off the Sahara. Mornings can feel fresh; afternoons are hot.

    • Light layers: a fine knit or overshirt you can take off by midday.
    • Leather sneakers that you can wipe; dust sinks into canvas and mesh.
    • Lip balm and moisturiser: dry air shows on skin before clothes.
    • Reset your wardrobe after Detty December.

What should I wear for Valentine's Day 2027?

Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday, so many dates will follow church or be a long lunch. Dress smart casual: a knitted polo or a good shirt, straight or pleated trousers, and clean sneakers or loafers. A red, burgundy or pink accent is a nice touch without being too obvious. See Valentine's Day outfit ideas and date night outfits.

What should I wear for Independence Day and Easter?

Independence Day, Saturday 6 March. Wear a red, gold or green accent, a smock (fugu) or a kente piece. Keep the rest of the outfit plain so the colours stand out. See Independence Day outfits.

Easter weekend, 26 to 29 March. Easter comes early in 2027. Good Friday is often sombre, so dark or muted colours; Easter Sunday is the big church outfit, in light colours, a sharp shirt or suit, and polished shoes. February and March are Accra's hottest months on average, so choose linen or lightweight fabrics. See Easter outfit ideas and church outfits for men.

How do I dress for the rainy season (April to June)?

    • Shoes: dark leather sneakers or leather shoes you can wipe. Keep suede and white canvas for dry days.
    • Trousers: a slight break or cropped, so hems don't soak up puddles.
    • Shirts: cotton, linen and quick-dry fabrics. Humidity reaches 85% in June.
    • A light water-resistant layer for the commute.
    • Protect your shoes: spray before the rains start, and dry wet shoes stuffed with paper in the shade.

See rainy season outfits and rainy season shoes.

What should I wear in July and August?

The mid-year cool spell. Rain eases in July, and August is the driest month after the main rains, with the year's coolest average high (about 28°C). It's the best time of year for a light overshirt, a fine knit in the evening or a cardigan. Republic Day on Thursday 1 July is a public holiday again from 2025. See overshirts and best knitwear for men in 2027.

What should I wear to weddings and events later in the year?

September to November brings lighter second rains and a busy run of weddings, engagements, naming ceremonies and parties. Founder's Day returns on Tuesday 21 September.

    • Suits: linen or tropical wool in navy, grey, cream or brown. See best suits for men in 2027.
    • Shoes: loafers for most events, dark lace-ups for formal ones, and a dark pair of sneakers for wet days.
    • Colours of the day: follow them at weddings and engagements.

What about December and Detty December 2027?

Harmattan returns, Accra fills with visitors, and the calendar fills with beach parties, concerts, dinners and church services. Christmas falls on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday.

    • Beach parties: linen shirts, tailored shorts, sandals or white canvas sneakers.
    • Concerts and festivals: comfortable sneakers you can stand in all night, and breathable fabrics.
    • Dinners: a knitted polo or a linen suit, loafers.
    • Christmas church: your sharpest outfit.

See Detty December style guide, festival and concert outfits and Christmas and New Year outfits.

    How is the north different?

Northern Ghana has one rainy season, roughly from May to October, and a longer, stronger harmattan with cooler nights and hotter afternoons than Accra. If you live in or travel to Tamale, Bolgatanga or Wa, pack a warmer layer for harmattan nights and plan rain shoes for the middle of the year. See the Ghana Meteorological Agency for forecasts.

When should I buy for each season?

Before you need it, with time for delivery: within 24 hours (tomorrow) in Greater Accra and within 72 hours (3 days) outside it.
