Upgrading your wardrobe
New year wardrobe reset 2027: a 4-week January plan
By sneakersInn team · Updated
To reset your wardrobe for 2027, give it four weeks in January: clear out in week one, fix and clean in week two, fill the gaps in week three and plan outfits in week four. After Detty December, most men have clothes that need washing, shoes that need cleaning and pieces that no longer fit. This plan costs almost nothing until week three, and then you buy only what you're actually missing.
January is the right month for it. The parties are over, harmattan keeps the weather dry, and the year's big dressing moments (Valentine's Day, Independence Day, Easter, then wedding season) haven't started yet. This guide walks through each week step by step, with checklists, the questions to ask about every piece, what to buy for 2027 and how to plan outfits so getting dressed takes five minutes.
| Week | Task | Time | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 (1 to 10 Jan) | Clear out: keep, fix, give away | One afternoon | Nothing |
| 2 (11 to 17 Jan) | Fix and clean: tailor, wash, polish, clean sneakers | Two evenings | Tailor and cleaning supplies |
| 3 (18 to 24 Jan) | Fill the gaps from a written list | One or two orders | Your budget |
| 4 (25 to 31 Jan) | Plan outfits for work, church and events | One evening | Nothing |
Week 1: How do I clear out my wardrobe?
Take everything out: shirts, trousers, knits, suits, shoes, even the bag under the bed. Put it on the bed and sort it into three piles.
| Pile | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Keep | Fits now, in good condition, worn in the last year |
| Fix | Good piece, but needs a tailor, a button, a clean or a polish |
| Give away | Doesn't fit, stained, worn out, or not worn for a year |
Questions to ask about every piece
- Does it fit me now? Not "when I lose weight". Fit matters more than price. See why fit matters.
- Have I worn it in the last year? If not, why not?
- Does it go with at least three other things I own?
- Would I buy it again today?
- Is it in good condition: no stains, holes, fading, pilling or stretched collars?
Two "no" answers usually means it goes. Be honest. Most men wear a small part of their wardrobe most of the time; the rest just makes getting dressed harder.
Where can I give clothes away?
Family, church clothing drives, or people who need them. Clean everything first. If you're looking for second-hand finds yourself, see second-hand shopping at Kantamanto.

Week 2: How do I fix and clean what I'm keeping?
Take the fix pile to a tailor
- Trousers too long: hem to a slight break or none.
- Waist too big: take it in.
- Sleeves too long: shorten jacket sleeves so a little shirt cuff shows.
- Missing buttons and small tears: quick, cheap fixes.
A tailor can make good clothes fit, but can't fix shoulders that are too big or add width to slim trousers. See how to work with a tailor in Accra.
Clean everything properly
- Shirts: treat sweat stains before washing. See how to remove sweat stains.
- Knitwear: wash cool and gentle, dry flat, fold. See how to wash and store knitwear.
- Suits: air, steam and spot-clean; dry-clean only if needed. See how to care for a suit.
- Clothes in general: check care labels. See how to read clothing care labels and clothing care 101.
Clean your shoes
December is hard on sneakers: beach sand, dance floors and dusty harmattan streets.
- Remove laces and insoles; wash laces separately or replace them.
- Brush off dry dirt.
- Clean uppers with a damp cloth and mild soap (leather) or a suede brush (suede).
- Scrub soles with a soft brush.
- Stuff with paper and dry in the shade.
- Spray with a protector.
- Polish leather shoes.

Week 3: What should I buy?
Only what's missing from the essentials. Write the list before you shop and stick to it.
- Compare what you kept against the 15 wardrobe essentials for 2027.
- Mark the gaps. Most men find they need one or two of: white leather sneakers, a knitted polo, straight navy chinos, a light blue shirt, a linen shirt, brown loafers.
- Rank them by how often you'll wear them. Buy the top one or two this month.
- Check every new piece goes with three things you own.
- Buy one 2027 piece at most, such as cream trousers or a brown knit. See men's colour trends 2027.
If your sneakers didn't survive December, replace them first. Delivery is free on 2 or more pairs, so if you need two, order them together. See best sneakers for men in 2027 and how to shop for clothes without wasting money.
Week 4: How do I plan outfits for the year?
This is the step most men skip, and it saves the most time.
- Lay out five work outfits from what you own.
- Lay out two church outfits and two event outfits.
- Take a photo of each and keep them in an album on your phone.
- Note what each outfit needs: ironing, a specific belt, a specific pair of shoes.
- On busy mornings, pick a photo.

Organise the wardrobe itself
- Hang shirts, suits and trousers by type, then by colour.
- Fold knitwear and tees.
- Keep shoes in pairs, off the floor if you can, with air around them.
- Put the clothes for the current season at the front.
What's coming in 2027 that I should plan for?
| When | What | Prepare |
|---|---|---|
| 14 Feb (Sunday) | Valentine's Day | A date-night outfit |
| 6 Mar (Saturday) | Independence Day | A red, gold or green piece or a smock |
| 26 to 29 Mar | Easter weekend | A sharp church outfit |
| April to June | Main rainy season | Dark sneakers, rain-ready shoes |
| Through the year | Weddings | A suit that fits, the right shoes |
| December | Harmattan, Detty December | Light knits, party outfits |

How do I keep the wardrobe in order all year?
- One in, one out: when you buy something, give one thing away.
- A quick check every quarter: what hasn't been worn?
- Clean shoes weekly and look after your clothes. Care is cheaper than replacing.
Questions
Is January a good time to buy sneakers?
Yes, if your pairs are worn out after December. See the shop.
How do I avoid buying things I won't wear?
Only buy items that go with at least three things you already own, and always shop from a written list.
Can I do this in a weekend?
Weeks one and two, yes. Leave the buying for a week later so you don't rush it.
What if I don't have money to buy anything in January?
Do weeks one, two and four. Fixing, cleaning and planning will make your wardrobe feel new on its own.
What should I do with clothes that don't fit yet?
If you're actively changing size, keep one or two favourites. Otherwise, give them away.
