5 dress codes every man should understand

    By sneakersInn team · Updated

The five dress codes every man should understand are casual, smart casual, business casual, business formal and black tie. Each step up adds structure: a collar, then tailored trousers, then a jacket, then a tie, then a dinner suit. If an invitation is unclear, go one step smarter than you think you need.

    What does casual mean?

Casual means comfortable clothes without a collar or jacket required: tees, jeans, shorts, sneakers. It still means clean and fitted. Casual is not the same as careless, and a fitted tee with dark jeans and white sneakers looks far better than a faded oversized top.

    What does smart casual mean?

Smart casual means a collar or a fine knit, proper trousers and leather shoes or clean minimal sneakers. No tie or suit is needed. It is the most common dress code for dinners, birthdays and dates. A knitted polo with chinos and loafers is the simplest way to get it right in Accra's heat.

    What does business casual mean?

Business casual means office wear without a suit: a collared shirt, chinos or tailored trousers and leather shoes, with a blazer for meetings. It is the dress code in most offices in Accra. Our guide to business casual in Ghana explains what offices here actually expect.

    What does business formal mean?

Business formal means a suit and tie. A navy or charcoal suit, white or light blue shirt, plain tie and black or dark brown leather shoes. It is the standard for job interviews, formal meetings and many weddings. See what to wear to a job interview in Accra.

    What does black tie mean?

Black tie means a dinner suit (a tuxedo): a black or midnight blue jacket with satin or grosgrain lapels, matching trousers, a white dress shirt, a black bow tie and black polished shoes. It is rare in Ghana but appears at galas and award nights. If you don't own a dinner suit, a well-fitted black or midnight navy suit with a black tie is the accepted fallback at most events here.

How do dress codes work at Ghanaian events?

Ghanaian events often set their own codes:

    • Funerals: black, or black and red, or white for the funeral of an elderly person whose long life is being celebrated. Follow the family's announced colours. See funeral dressing in Ghana.
    • Weddings and engagements: the couple often announce colours or a fabric. See what to wear to a Ghanaian wedding.
    • Traditional or "native" wear: a smock, kaftan, kente or a print outfit. See Friday wear.
    • Church: smart casual at least, often smarter. See church outfits for men.

What if the invitation doesn't say?

Look at the venue and the time. Evening and indoor events lean formal; daytime and outdoor events lean relaxed. When in doubt, wear a suit without a tie and bring one in your pocket. You can always remove a layer; you can't add one you didn't bring.

    Questions

Is "smart" the same as "formal"?

No. "Smart" usually means smart casual or business casual. "Formal" means a suit and tie at least.

Can I wear sneakers to a smart casual event?

Yes, if they are clean, plain leather or suede and the rest of the outfit is sharp. See sneakers for the office for similar rules.

What should I own to cover all five codes?

The pieces in the 5 clothing basics every man should buy before anything else, one navy or charcoal suit and the five pairs in the shoes every man should own. Black tie is the only code that needs something special.
