Dressing for occasions in Ghana
What to wear for a photoshoot
By sneakersInn team · Updated
For a photoshoot, wear clothes that fit perfectly, in solid colours or simple patterns, in tones that flatter your skin, with some texture to add depth. Avoid fine stripes and tiny checks, which can flicker on camera, and big logos, which date photos. Bring two or three outfits from different dress levels so you get variety.
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Solid, rich colours: navy, burgundy, emerald, cream, olive | Fine stripes and small checks |
| Texture: linen, knit, suede, kente | Shiny fabrics that reflect light |
| Perfect fit, pressed | Creases and baggy fits |
| Clean, polished shoes | Scuffed sneakers |
| Two or three outfits | One outfit for everything |
Which colours photograph best on dark skin?
Rich jewel tones (emerald, cobalt, burgundy), warm earth tones (rust, mustard, olive) and clean whites and creams all photograph beautifully. Very bright white can lose detail in harsh sun. See best colours for dark skin.
How do I plan outfits?
- Formal: a well-fitted suit or a kaftan.
- Smart casual: a knitted polo or shirt with tailored trousers.
- Casual: a tee, overshirt and clean sneakers.
Make sure the colours work with the location: light outfits on dark backgrounds, darker outfits on light ones.
What about couple or family shoots?
Coordinate, don't match. Choose a palette of two or three colours that everyone wears in different combinations. See colour matching for men.
What should I check before the shoot?
- Clothes ironed or steamed
- Shoes cleaned and polished
- Haircut a few days before
- Lint roller for dark clothes
- Moisturiser for skin, especially in harmattan
Questions
Should I wear traditional wear?
For cultural or family shoots, kente, a smock or a kaftan photographs beautifully. See Friday wear.
Glasses or no glasses?
Wear them if you always do; ask the photographer about reflections.
What shoes?
Clean and polished; they show in full-length shots. See how to keep white sneakers clean.
