What to wear to a Ghanaian wedding as a guest
By sneakersInn team · Updated
As a guest at a Ghanaian wedding, wear the colours or fabric the couple has announced, if they have. If not, wear a well-fitted suit or smart trousers and shirt to the church or white wedding, and traditional wear, such as a kaftan, smock or print outfit, to the engagement or traditional marriage. Avoid wearing white or anything that could compete with the couple.
| Part of the wedding | What men usually wear | Shoes |
|---|---|---|
| Engagement or traditional marriage | Kente, kaftan, smock or print shirt and trousers | Ahenema sandals, loafers |
| Church or white wedding | Navy, grey or light suit with a tie | Oxfords, derbies, loafers |
| Reception | Suit without tie, or smart casual | Loafers, derbies, clean leather sneakers if relaxed |
| Court or registry | Suit or smart casual | Leather shoes |
Should I wear the couple's colours?
Yes, if they've announced them. Many Ghanaian couples share their wedding colours or a chosen fabric with guests. Wearing them shows you're part of the celebration. A tie, pocket square or shirt in the colours is enough if a full outfit isn't practical.
What should I wear to the engagement?
Traditional wear is the norm. Men commonly wear kente cloth, a kaftan, a smock (batakari or fugu) or a print shirt with matching trousers. If the family has chosen a fabric, wear it. See what men should wear to an engagement ceremony.
What should I wear to the church wedding?
A suit, ideally navy, grey or a lighter colour for daytime, with a tie. If the day is hot and the venue relaxed, a linen suit works well. See the 5 types of suits every man needs.
What should I wear to the reception?
What you wore to the church, with the tie off if the mood is relaxed. Some receptions have a second dress code or "after party" outfit; check the invitation.
What should I avoid?
- White or ivory head to toe, unless the couple asks for it.
- Shorts, slides and gym wear.
- Black head to toe, which many associate with funerals, unless it's an evening event and the couple's colours include black.
- Anything louder than the couple.
What about the heat?
Ghanaian weddings are often long and outdoors. Choose lightweight wool, linen or cotton suits, a linen shirt under the jacket, and comfortable broken-in shoes. Carry a handkerchief.
