How to stop sneaker odour in hot weather
By sneakersInn team · Updated
Sneaker odour comes from bacteria breaking down sweat inside the shoe, and Accra's heat and humidity give them ideal conditions. Stop it by rotating pairs so each dries fully, wearing moisture-wicking socks, taking insoles out to air, washing your feet and drying between your toes, and using baking soda or cedar to absorb moisture overnight.
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Sweat soaks the lining | Rotate pairs; let each dry 24 hours or more |
| No socks | Wear no-show socks; never go bare-foot in sneakers |
| Damp insoles | Remove and air them; replace when worn |
| Bacteria on feet | Wash daily, dry well between toes |
| Closed storage | Store in a ventilated place, not a sealed box |
Why do sneakers smell more in Accra?
Feet have more sweat glands per square centimetre than almost anywhere else on the body, and heat increases sweating. When sweat is trapped in a closed shoe, bacteria break it down into strong-smelling compounds. Accra's warmth and humidity keep shoes damp longer, so bacteria thrive.
What's the most effective fix?
Rotation. A pair worn every day never fully dries. Switch between at least two or three pairs. See building a sneaker rotation on a budget.
Which socks help?
Socks made of merino wool or a cotton blend with moisture-wicking fibres pull sweat away from the skin. Change them daily, or twice on very hot days. See what socks to wear.
How do I deodorise sneakers at home?
- Remove the insoles and laces.
- Sprinkle baking soda inside, leave overnight, and shake it out.
- Wash the insoles in warm soapy water, rinse and dry completely.
- Use cedar shoe trees or put dry tea bags or paper inside to absorb moisture.
- Air in the shade with the tongue pulled open.
Should I use sprays?
Antibacterial shoe sprays help when used regularly on dry shoes. They mask and reduce smell but don't replace drying and rotation.
How do I look after my feet?
Wash feet daily with soap, dry thoroughly between the toes, and keep toenails short. Foot powder helps on hot days. If odour persists despite all of this, or comes with itching or cracked skin, see a pharmacist or doctor; it may be a fungal infection such as athlete's foot (NHS: athlete's foot).
Questions
Can I wash smelly sneakers in a machine?
It's risky for glue and shape. Clean by hand and wash the insoles separately. See how to make your sneakers last longer.
Do mesh sneakers smell less?
They dry faster, which helps. See retro runners.
When should I replace the insoles?
When they're flat, cracked or smell even after washing. New insoles often fix an old pair.
