How to store sneakers properly
By sneakersInn team · Updated
Store sneakers clean and completely dry, out of direct sunlight, in a cool and ventilated space, with shoe trees or paper inside to hold their shape. In Accra's heat and humidity, sunlight causes yellowing and fading, and damp, closed spaces cause mould, so airflow and shade matter most.
| Do | Don't |
|---|---|
| Clean before storing | Store dirty pairs |
| Dry fully first | Put away damp shoes |
| Use shoe trees or paper | Let toes collapse |
| Keep out of sunlight | Store by a sunny window |
| Allow airflow | Seal in plastic bags |
| Add silica gel in rainy season | Store in a hot car or room |
Should I keep the boxes?
Boxes protect from dust and light, which is good for pairs you wear rarely. Cut or punch a few air holes, add a silica gel pack, and label the end. For pairs in rotation, an open shelf is easier and lets them air.
Why do soles turn yellow?
Rubber and some foams oxidise when exposed to light, heat and air, which yellows them over time. Storing out of the sun slows it. See how to keep white sneakers clean.
How do I stop mould?
Mould grows on damp materials in humid air. Dry shoes fully, use silica gel or charcoal bags, ventilate the space and check stored pairs monthly in the rainy season. See how to keep clothes looking new in humid weather.
How do I store for a long time?
Clean, dry, stuff with acid-free paper, wrap in a cotton bag, add silica gel, and keep in a box with air holes in a cool place.
How should I organise a rotation?
Keep the pairs you wear most at the front and in reach, sorted by colour or occasion. Seeing them helps you rotate. See building a sneaker rotation.
Questions
Can I stack sneaker boxes?
Yes, if the boxes are sturdy. Don't stack shoes directly on each other.
Are clear drop-front boxes good?
They protect from dust and make pairs easy to see; keep them away from sunlight.
