How to wash and store knitwear properly

    By sneakersInn team · Updated

Wash knitwear inside out in cold water on a gentle or wool cycle (or by hand), press out the water without wringing, dry it flat in the shade, fold it rather than hanging it, and store it clean with cedar. Heat and hanging are what ruin most knits: heat shrinks them and hangers stretch them.

How do I hand wash a knit?

    1. Fill a basin with cold or cool water and a little wool wash or mild detergent.
    2. Turn the knit inside out and submerge it. Swirl gently.
    3. Soak for about 10 minutes.
    4. Drain and rinse in clean cool water until the soap is gone.
    5. Press the water out against the basin. Don't wring.
    6. Roll it in a dry towel to absorb more water.
    7. Lay it flat on a fresh towel, reshape it, and dry in the shade.

    Can I machine wash knits?

Many cotton and machine-washable merino knits can go in on a wool or delicate cycle at 30°C or below, inside a mesh laundry bag. Check the care label first.

How often should I wash knits?

Less than you'd think. Merino resists odour and can be aired between wears. Cotton knits worn next to skin in Accra's heat need washing more often. Wear a tee underneath to keep knits fresher for longer.

    How do I remove pilling?

Pills are small balls of fibre that form where a knit rubs, under the arms and at the sides. Remove them with a knit comb, a fabric shaver or a clean razor drawn lightly across the surface. Don't pull them off by hand; it pulls out more fibre.

    How do I store knitwear?

    1. Fold, don't hang. Hangers stretch shoulders.
    2. Store clean. Moths and insects are attracted to sweat and food.
    3. Use cedar blocks or lavender to deter moths.
    4. Keep it dry. In the rainy season, use silica gel packs and air the wardrobe. See how to keep clothes looking new in humid weather.
    5. Use breathable boxes or cotton bags for long-term storage, not sealed plastic.

    Questions

My knit shrank. Can I fix it?

Sometimes. Soak it in lukewarm water with hair conditioner for 30 minutes, press out the water and gently stretch it back into shape as it dries flat.

    Can I iron knits?

Use steam, held above the fabric, or a low iron through a cloth. Pressing flattens the texture.
