How to measure yourself for clothes

    By sneakersInn team · Updated

To measure yourself for clothes, use a soft tape measure and record seven numbers: chest, waist, hips (seat), shoulders, sleeve, inseam and neck. Stand relaxed, keep the tape level and snug but not tight, and ask someone to help with shoulders and sleeves. Keep the numbers on your phone for online shopping and tailors.

Should I measure myself or my clothes?

Both. Body measurements are for size charts and tailors. Measuring clothes that fit you well (laid flat) is even more useful for online shopping, because you can compare garment to garment.

How do I measure a shirt that fits?

Lay it flat and buttoned. Measure across the chest from armpit to armpit and double it, across the shoulders seam to seam, and the sleeve from shoulder seam to cuff end.

How do I measure trousers that fit?

Lay them flat. Measure across the waistband and double it, and the inseam from crotch seam to hem.

How do I measure my feet?

How do I use the numbers?

Compare with the brand's size guide, choosing by your most important fit point: shoulders for shirts and jackets, waist and seat for trousers. Then tailor the rest. See why fit matters more than price.

    Questions

Every six months, or after weight changes.

    Do tailors need these measurements?
