Linen suits: how to stay sharp in Ghana's heat
By sneakersInn team · Updated
A linen suit is the coolest way to wear tailoring in Ghana. Linen lets air through, absorbs sweat and dries fast, so you stay comfortable at an outdoor wedding or a daytime event when wool would feel heavy. It creases, and that is part of its relaxed look; choose an unlined or half-lined cut, a light colour and keep it steamed.
| Choose | Why |
|---|---|
| Unlined or half-lined jacket | Less fabric, more air |
| Light colours: stone, sand, light grey, sky blue, olive | Reflect sunlight and look fresh |
| Linen blended with wool or cotton | Creases less than pure linen |
| Patch pockets and soft shoulders | Match linen's relaxed character |
| Single-breasted | Can be worn open |
Why is linen cooler than wool?
Linen is made from flax fibres, which are hollow and stiff, so the woven cloth stands slightly away from your skin and lets air move. It also absorbs moisture and releases it quickly. Accra's average highs of about 31°C and humidity often near 80% (climate of Accra) are the conditions linen was made for.
Is pure linen or a blend better?
Pure linen is the coolest and creases the most. Linen blended with wool keeps more shape and creases less; linen with cotton is softer and cheaper. For events where you'll sit for hours, a blend looks neater by the end of the day.
What colours work best?
Light, natural colours: stone, sand, ecru, light grey, sky blue and soft olive. Navy linen is a good, more versatile option that still breathes. Avoid black linen for daytime events; it absorbs heat and fades.
How do I handle the creases?
Accept some creases; that's how linen is meant to look. To keep them under control:
- Steam the suit before wearing instead of ironing hard.
- Hang it on a wide hanger as soon as you take it off; creases fall out overnight.
- Unbutton the jacket when you sit.
- Choose a blend if you need to look crisp all day.
What do I wear with a linen suit?
- Shirts: white or light blue linen or cotton, or a knitted polo.
- Ties: optional; knitted or textured ties if you wear one.
- Shoes: brown loafers, suede derbies or clean white leather sneakers. See how to wear a suit with sneakers.
- Socks: no-show socks with loafers, or thin cotton socks.
Where can I wear a linen suit?
Daytime weddings, garden parties, naming ceremonies, beach weddings, Easter and Christmas lunches, and holidays. It is too relaxed for funerals, job interviews and formal business meetings, where a dark wool suit is expected. See the 5 dress codes every man should understand.
How do I care for a linen suit?
Many linen suits can be gently hand washed or dry cleaned; follow the label, because the jacket structure may not survive a machine. Dry it in the shade, steam rather than iron at high heat, and store it with space in the wardrobe so it doesn't crush. More in how to care for a suit.
