What men should wear to an engagement ceremony
By sneakersInn team · Updated
At a Ghanaian engagement or traditional marriage ceremony, men wear traditional or African print outfits: the fabric the families have chosen, kente cloth, a kaftan, a smock (batakari or fugu) or a print shirt and trousers, with ahenema sandals or leather loafers. Western suits are less common at this part of the wedding.
| Role | What to wear |
|---|---|
| Groom | Kente or the chosen fabric, often matching the bride; ahenema sandals |
| Close family | The families' chosen fabric or colours |
| Friends and guests | The chosen fabric if shared; otherwise a kaftan, smock or print outfit in the colours |
| Unsure guest | A plain kaftan or a print shirt with matching trousers in a neutral colour |
What is an engagement ceremony in Ghana?
In many Ghanaian traditions, the engagement or traditional marriage is when the groom's family formally asks the bride's family for her hand, presents agreed items, and the families celebrate together. It often follows an earlier "knocking" visit. It is a major event in its own right, and many couples hold it separately from the church wedding.
Why does the fabric matter?
Families often choose a fabric or colour for the day and share it with relatives and friends. Wearing it shows unity and support. If you're given the fabric, take it to a tailor early; December is busy. See how to work with a tailor in Accra.
How do men wear kente?
Traditionally, men wear kente wrapped around the body like a toga, over one shoulder, often with no shirt or with a simple top, and ahenema sandals. Modern styles include kente as a shirt, a waistcoat or accents on a kaftan. Kente's patterns and colours carry meanings and were historically associated with royalty (Kente cloth on Wikipedia).
What if I don't have traditional wear?
A well-made print shirt with plain trousers in a matching colour, or a plain kaftan, is respectful and easy. See Friday wear: mixing African prints with modern pieces.
Which shoes?
Ahenema sandals for traditional cloth, or leather loafers and sandals with kaftans and print outfits. Sneakers are usually too casual for the ceremony itself. See the 5 types of shoes every man should own.
What should I avoid?
- Wearing a colour that clashes with the families' chosen colours
- Shorts or very casual wear
- Overdressing the groom
