Tucked or untucked? A simple rule for every shirt

    By sneakersInn team · Updated

The simple rule: tuck in any shirt whose hem reaches past the middle of your seat or has a long curved tail, and any shirt you wear with a suit, tailored trousers or a tie. Leave untucked any shirt with a short, straight hem that ends around the middle of your trouser fly, such as linen shirts, polos, overshirts and casual short-sleeve shirts.

Oxford shirt with jeansEither; untuck only if the hem is short
    Linen shirtUsually untucked

T-shirtUntucked; tucked into high-waisted trousers as a style choice

Why does the hem shape matter?

Dress shirts have long, curved tails designed to stay tucked when you sit and move. Untucked, they hang too low and look sloppy. Casual shirts have shorter, straighter hems designed to be worn out.

    What about the half tuck?

Tucking just the front of a shirt or tee into your trousers (the "French tuck") shows the waistband and belt and works with relaxed outfits. It works best with knits and tees, less with formal shirts.

How do I keep a shirt tucked?

    1. Choose a shirt long enough to cover your seat.
    2. Wear trousers that fit at the waist.
    3. Use the "military tuck": pinch the excess fabric at your sides, fold it back flat, then tuck.
    4. Shirt stays (elastic straps) are an option for long days.

    Tucking and body shape

A tucked shirt shows the waistline. If you're tall and slim, tucking breaks up your height. If you carry weight around the middle, a well-fitted shirt tucked into mid-rise trousers with a matching belt is cleaner than an untucked shirt pulling across the stomach. See dressing for your body type.

    Should I tuck a polo?
